Audio-Conference Description Providers continue to struggle with issues related to possible abandonment of patients. Patients may need services but may be chronically non-compliant which increases risks of liability for the agency and individual staff members. Physicians may be uncooperative with regard to face-to-face documentation and agencies cannot, and probably should not, provide free services to patients. Other patients may no longer meet the eligibility criteria of the Medicare Program and other payors but clearly still need services. What can agencies do in these situations? What should agencies do about non-compliant patients? What can agencies do to facilitate face-to-face documentation without violating applicable requirements? If these situations cannot be resolved, how can agencies discontinue services to patients without liability for abandonment? The emphasis will be on practical solutions to these dilemmas for all types of home care providers, including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies. (see more...)
